Introduction of Coins
This was the first issue of dimes from New Orleans since 1845. It is another fairly low mintage entry that is readily available in worn condition but becomes increasingly rare at or near Mint State. Gems are essentially unknown, but the coin illustrated proves that at least a few unworn examples survive. 1849 O dimes were coined with either the Small O or Large O mintmarks used in previous years. These are of approximately similar availability overall, but the Small O (photos) dimes seem to be more often seen in higher grades. One Small O variety also has a repunched date.Read More
