By 1850 the effects of the California Gold Rush were being felt in the falling price of gold as measured against silver. This made the nation's silver coins worth slightly more than face, which led to hoarding and some exportation as bullion. The 1850 Philadelphia Mint dime reflects this trend in that a higher than usual percentage of Mint State pieces is known. Some of these are from a hoard that surfaced in the 1970s.
