Introduction of Coins
Due to the rising price of silver after 1849, most 1851 dimes failed to circulate extensively at the time. Some were hoarded for their bullion value, probably accounting for the Mint State survivors, while others were shipped overseas where they either circulated locally or were melted for their bullion value. One obverse die features both a repunched date and a misplaced date. This die, when in its early die state and paired with a rusted reverse, is a Top 100 variety.Read More
