New Orleans Mint dimes experienced a very high rate of attrition at the best of times, but those coined just prior to the weight reduction of 1853 suffered even greater losses due to their high bullion value. Worn pieces are moderately scarce, while those at or near the Mint State level are quite rare. Walter Breen's listing of a Small O variety is not confirmed, as there is just a single die pair presently known for this issue.
