Introduction of Coins
A certain percentage of this issue was likely lost to the melting pot early on, as dimes contained more than ten cents worth of silver in 1852. This was due to a temporary depression in the value of gold, which was abundant at the time due to rich discoveries in California and Australia. Despite this handicap, the 1852 dime is not especially scarce across most grades. A disproportionately high percentage of the survivors are Mint State or close to it, perhaps due to hoarding associated with their bullion value. The sole variety of interest features a repunched date. When paired with a cracked reverse it is a Top 100 entry.Read More
