Introduction of Coins
A single obverse die was paired with two reverses to complete this mintage. Some six 1852-dated obverse dies had been shipped to the New Orleans Mint, but these were destroyed at the end of the year. This issue is moderately scarce in circulated grades and somewhat rare in Mint State, but it is not as rare as the 1851 O dime. The unworn survivors are likely the remnants of coins that were withheld from circulation due to being worth more than face value at the time. When the price of silver fell during the mid 1870s, such coins could have been placed in circulation, and it's likely that this is when most of the worn pieces found today earned their wear.Read More
