Introduction of Coins
The 1854 O dime is fairly common in the lesser circulated grades, becoming only moderately scarce a the XF level. Mint State pieces are likewise scarce, with gems being very rare. Most survivors are a bit poorly struck, particularly at Liberty's head. The example illustrated is particularly deficient in strike at the borders. There are few true varieties for 1854 O dimes, mostly just die state oddities that possess little attraction to collectors. One exception, perhaps, is the reverse die on which the mintmark was punched into the die at a steep angle. The bottom of the O is well defined, while the top fades into the coin's field. F-102 with a shattered obverse die is also collectable.Read More
