Introduction of Coins
Coining of the new Seated Liberty Dime began June 30, 1837 with the striking of a few proofs for presentation. Though the total minted for circulation by year's end was not especially high, this date is fairly common in Mint State. Many were preserved by the public for their novelty. Most unworn survivors are of the Large Date style, as this was the first variety coined and released. The Small Date (photos) is noticeably more scarce in Mint State, though not truly rare. Unlike the half dime, for which the terms Large Date and Small Date describe differences in font rather than size, the distinctions seen on the dime are ones of both style and size. Minor date repunchings are reported for the Large Date coins, but these are of interest only to series specialists. Gerry Fortin's Top 100 includes two entries for cracked and/or clashed dies. Most 1837 Seated Liberty Dimes are well struck, with only minor weakness sometimes seen in the shield lines and/or the denticles. Mint State pieces, though plentiful, are in great demand as the only common date of this subtype without stars.Read More
