Introduction of Coins
This issue was produced in quantity, and examples are plentiful across all circulated grades. Mint State are not especially rare, though the number of gems falls short of those for 1837 and 1838 Philadelphia Mint dimes. As the novelty of this coin type had worn off by 1839, examples have survived unworn by mere chance. Most 1839 dime are well struck, though a few may show slight weakness in the shield, as this was the deepest part of the obverse die cavity. Blurred or incomplete denticles are sometimes seen, but these are more the result of die erosion than striking weakness. Mostly minor varieties are known for the 1839 dime, including slight repunching of numerals 39. Fortin's F-105c with its obverse die shattered in a pie wedge pattern is extremely popular.Read More
