Introduction of Coins
The 1857 O dime is the first New Orleans entry in this series that is fairly available in Mint State. Well struck examples are also plentiful, making this issue a candidate for the type collector. Its generous mintage derived from Director Snowden's policy of paying out silver in exchange for silver bullion deposits. This led to a distressing overproduction of fractional silver coins, and the policy was rescinded by 1859. This issue is known with either the Medium O or Large O (photos) mintmark, the latter being the more common variety. F-101b also features a shattered reverse die.Read More
