1858 was the final year in which mintages exceeded actually circulation demand, as the Mint was paying out dimes and other fractional silver coins in exchange for its silver bullion purchases at subsidized prices. Though produced in quantity, the 1858 Philadelphia Mint dime is not common in the higher circulated grades. In fact, Mint State examples may be more often seen, though precious few are gems.
