Introduction of Coins
The 1858 S dime is a very scarce issue across all grades, with Mint State pieces being very rare. Both Brian Greer's book and Gerry Fortin's website rate this issue as more rare than the 1856 S and 1859 S dimes in grades VF and higher, yet this fact is not reflected in all price guides. Walter Breen reported that four die pairs were shipped to San Francisco for 1858 dimes. Three obverse dies were paired in combination with two reverses to produce this small mintage, suggesting that coining was sporadic over the course of the year.Read More
