The discontinuance of Director Snowden's policy of buying silver bullion and paying for it with silver coins is evident in the much smaller mintage of dimes this year. Henceforth, subsidiary silver coins would be paid out only in exchange for gold so as to prevent the redundancies that riled banks and businesses over the previous several years. The 1859 dime is slightly scarce across all circulated grades, but there seems to be a fair number of Mint State survivors. Some of these, however, are weakly struck at Liberty's head and the bow knot. One nice variety features a misplaced numeral within Liberty's skirt to the right of the ribbon edge.
