Introduction of Coins
The 1844 is an exceptionally scarce ten with a low mintage of only 6,361 pieces, a mintage that, in this case, is a good indicator of how rare this date really is. Part of the reason this issue is so rare is because of the hard times the country experienced from 1838-44, years of unemployment and starvation. The 1844 is considered 'prohibitively rare' in XF by Breen. Only a couple of coins are known in mint condition and AU pieces are of the greatest rarity and importance.
