Introduction of Coins
The 1860 has a similar original mintage to the 1857 (16,606 pieces produced) and the 1859 (16,093 pieces produced), and all three issues are significant rarities that, when encountered at all, are apt to grade no finer than XF. The Philadelphia Mint limited its production of eagles in 1860 to a mere 15,105 pieces. Many of these coins were probably melted in the early years of the Civil War, and most survivors were retrieved from circulation.
