Introduction of Coins
In the early years of San Francisco Mint gold production, far more attention was given to the minting of double eagles. After similar quantities of S-mint eagles and double eagles were struck in 1854, only token mintages were recorded for most ten dollar issues well into the 1870s. Among the lowest of these is the 1860-S, an issue with an original production of just 5,000 pieces. The few pieces that survived the rough and tumble commerce of the Pacific West tend to be well circulated and heavily abraded.
