Introduction of Coins
Eagle production at the Carson City Mint ratcheted up to 16,767 pieces in 1874. This is a respectable total for the decade, and, indeed, the '74-CC is the most plentiful Carson City Eagle from the 1870s. A small hoard of 20-30 pieces entered the numismatic market in the mid-1990s. Most of these coins graded VF or XF, the two most prevalent grades among extant '74-CC Eagles. As a result, this issue remains elusive above the XF45 level with just 10-12 pieces believed extant in AU (per Winter and Halperin, 2001).
