Introduction of Coins
As a date, 1877 carries a certain cachet across all denominations as there are so many rare, low mintage issues from this year. This is a very rare ten-dollar Liberty. Only 797 business strikes were originally produced, making it one of the rarest issues in the entire series. Only the 1875 and 1873 are scarcer among Philadelphia dates. Most of the few surviving business strikes are evenly distributed among the VF and XF grades. At the time he wrote his book on this series, Akers had only seen one AU and one uncirculated example of the 1877. Today no mint state pieces have been certified.
