Introduction of Coins
Whereas the mintages of quarter and double eagles were extremely low in 1885, the Half Eagle and Eagle coins saw relatively large productions. In fact, over a quarter million $10 eagles were struck in 1885 in Philadelphia. The mintage of proofs was much lower at only 65 pieces, but that was certainly enough to appease collector demand at the time. Today, the mint state versions are quite hard to obtain in grades of MS63 or higher. The proofs are much rarer, and tend to grade in the PF64-PF65 range.Read More
