Introduction of Coins
The 1880 $10 gold eagle had a mintage of over 1.6 million pieces. This was the first time that an issue in this series had a mintage of over a million coins. However, they were poorly stored, making this issue surprisingly hard to locate at the choice or gem level. Proofs are orders of magnitude more rare however, as the Philadelphia Mint struck a mere 36 examples, of which perhaps half still exist.Read More
