Introduction of Coins
As in 1875, the Philadelphia Mint coined just a token number of 20-cent pieces this year. Had this been a widely circulating denomination, its mintage would have resulted in a rarity. As it is, a fair number of 1876(P) examples have survived in Mint State, though gems are in very short supply. Worn examples are quite rare, as few of these coins remained in circulation for more than a brief time. Most 1876(P) 20-cent pieces are well struck and quite lustrous. A very small have been certified as PL (prooflike). Brunner and Frost report two die marriages for this issue. One reverse displays a minor doubled-die, but this is unlikely to attract collector interest, since the date/mint is already quite scarce.Read More
