Introduction of Coins
The sale of the S.S. Brother Jonathan treasure included 68 different examples of this date. However, only one piece was graded Mint State (with environmental damage) and only one other was graded AU58. After that, about 40 lower quality AU grade coins were offered. Even though the rarity of this issue was noticeably diminished when that treasure was discovered and dispersed, it is still quite rare in top grades. About a dozen Mint State coins were found in the S.S. Republic treasure.
