Introduction of Coins
1875 is one of the rarest dates for collectors of Philadelphia Mint gold coins. All proof denominations are very rare, of course, but the business issues are also extremely difficult, from the gold dollar to the eagle. Only the 1875 double eagle has a reasonable business strike production. However, just 20 proofs were struck, and Breen (1988) opines that 'possibly 8-10 proofs survive.'
