Introduction of Coins
From the original 45-coin mintage, we believe that only about a dozen examples still exist today, although the number may be as high as 15 coins. At least one example, the Eliasberg-Trompeter specimen, is triple struck. The important of a proof Type Two double eagle cannot be overemphasized. The entire series was limited to just 11 years, and all are extremely rare in proof format. With 12 to 15 examples known, this 1876-dated double eagle is the most plentiful of any date in proof quality. We doubt that even 100 proof double eagles of this design type survive today, including all 11 dates.
