Introduction of Coins

The production of quarter dollars fell off quite a bit at the San Francisco Mint from 1943's total, but the saving of BU rolls has made examples of this issue common in Mint State. As is true of S-Mint coins of the decade, many of these survivors show over-extended use of the dies, with heavy erosion lines and blurred details. Some examples display semi-prooflike fields and may be accompanied by random die-polishing lines. The certified population is high through MS 67 but drops off drastically above this level. A few doubled-die varieties are known, most affecting the obverse and all but one being quite minor. 1944-S quarters are found with either the Knob-Tail S or large Serif S mintmark, and neither is rare.Read More
