Introduction of Coins
Despite a modest mintage, 1947-S quarters were widely hoarded, and gems are plentiful through MS 67. Some of these are quite prooflike, as a consequence of aggressive die polishing. Such action was taken to remove die-clash impressions and to smooth out fields ravaged by erosion lines through overuse of the dies. While these prooflike coins are highly prized, they sometimes reveal missing or shallow design elements. The several DDO varieties for this issue are all quite minor. It is the repunched mintmark varieties of 1947-S that have attracted collector interest, and all feature the Trumpet-Tail S, the only punch used for this date.Read More
