Introduction of Coins
The proof coins of 1950 were popular with collectors, but sales advanced only slightly the following year. The speculative market that would drive mintages to and beyond the million mark was still a few years away. While some of the 1951 quarters show only semi-prooflike brilliance, most are fully brilliant as in later years. Frosty legends and devices were just an occasional and fortunate coincidence for this issue. Both Cameo and Ultra Cameo examples are in limited supply and command strong premiums. Though sophisticated collectors appreciated the difference, there was no such added value in the 1950s and '60s. If these coins had been bringing high prices then, it's likely that the Mint would have made a more conscious effort to standardize a contrasting finish.Read More
