Introduction of Coins

An estimated 7,390 proof quarter dollars were coined to achieve the number of acceptable pieces needed, the balance being destroyed for flaws of one sort or another. The published mintage figure of 8,045 proof quarters for 1938 is a bit misleading, as the odd 45 coins were destroyed for assay purposes, whether in-house that year at the Philadelphia Mint or during the official annual assay held the following February. Some 10 obverse and six reverse dies were utilized for this production. The proof quarters of 1938 reveal another advance in average quality over 1936-37. Most are pleasingly brilliant, though without cameo contrast. The only notables flaws are ones seen repeatedly with United States proof coins made prior to the 1970s: Many pieces have shallow or missing details from overpolishing of the dies. Shallow features of the dies were easily eradicated through repeated polishings to restore the dies' brilliance. Gems are plentiful through PF 66, with a great number of higher-graded coins than in the previous two years.Read More
