Introduction of Coins

Eight obverse dies and seven reverses were used in coining the proof quarter dollars of 1940, as recorded in Roger Burdette's superb book on the proofs of 1936-42. Some 15,000 pieces were struck, many of these proving to be unsuitable in some way. Of the official mintage published, 66 coins were actually lost to assays, so the real net mintage for 1940 is 11,180 proof quarters. Quality control was a little tighter than in 1939, and fewer coins are seen from overly polished dies lacking in detail. Gems are fairly plentiful, and only in grades above PF 67 is this date rare.Read More
