Introduction of Coins

As is typical of the war years, the Denver Mint quarter dollars of this year are the ones most likely to be found well struck from properly maintained dies. Of course, far few coins were struck there than at the Philadelphia Mint, so it was perhaps possible to swap out worn dies more frequently. Gems are plentiful through MS 66, with a generous supply of MS 67 beauties, too. Doubled-die varieties are numerous for 1943-D. While it's tempting to believe that this was due to the hiring of replacement workers during the labor-shortage war years, the skilled craftsmen of the Philadelphia Mint's Die-Sinking Department would have been old enough or important enough to be exempt from military service. It was clearly the urgency of creating so many dies that led to careless errors in their hubbing. These have provided collectors with a rich hunting ground.Read More
