Introduction of Coins
Extremely large mintages of Morgan dollars more than accounted for the demand for dollar coins in 1879. Due to this large mintage, far fewer gold dollars were struck that year. The Philadelphia only struck a total of 3,030 pieces, with 3,000 mint states and a mere 30 proofs issued.
