Introduction of Coins
From an original production of only 3,500 business strikes, today the average certified survivor of the 1872 gold dollar issue only grades AU58 or thereabouts. Few high-grade examples exist, and among Mint State coins, most cluster in the range of MS62 through MS64. A tiny handful of wonderfully high-grade examples do exist, however, that were obviously held back from circulation at the time of their production and carefully preserved thereafter. Most of those coins show either full prooflike surfaces or semiprooflikeness.
