Jeff Garrett:With a tiny mintage of only 2,935 coins, the 1854-D issue must be considered rare in any condition. It is a major rarity in higher states of preservation. When seen, this date is usually well worn, and harshly cleaned coins are not unusual. Only a few examples are known to survive in choice or better condition. The obverse of most 1854-D gold dollars is adequately struck, but the reverse is always weak about the wreath and the central portions.
