Jeff Garrett:The typical 1846-O Liberty Head quarter eagle is heavily circulated with the softness of strike often seen on coins from the New Orleans Mint in that era. A fairly large number of coins have been graded by the services in varying states of concentration of known examples was in the Harry W. Bass Jr. Collection, which boasted 10 coins. The Pittman example is the finest known. The mintmark is large on all examples, and the last two digits of the date are tilted and very heavily impressed.
