Writing some 25 years ago, David Akers made this observation about the 1865-S quarter eagle: 'the average grade of VF25 is tied for the fourth lowest average grade of any quarter eagle in the entire series.' This issue remains very scarce and underrated, especially in high grades, with only a handful of examples certified in all Mint State grades.
