Introduction of Coins
This is another high-mintage date that is plentiful in worn condition. Mint State examples are available, but scarce, and precious few are gems. The dies were used far longer than they should have been, and many surviving coins reveal deep or multiple clash marks, extensive cracks and blurred peripheral features. Ten die marriages are known from the mating of nine obverses and ten reverses. None are rare, except in high grades. There are no popular varieties for this date, which merits just a single entry in general coin catalogs. The experimental edge devices used in 1809 were retired, and variations are few and more gradual for the remainder of this series.Read More
