Introduction of Coins
In this odd variety, letters UNI of UNITED are seen within the value statement, though they fade in a later die state. Since the letters are raised on the coins they must have been punched into the die, rather than resulting from a clash situation. Another, remote possibility is that the die was damaged by striking an already struck coin out of rotation. The hardened steel should not have been so affected, but this would explain the peculiar placement. This variety is quite scarce in Mint State, and gems are exceedingly rare.Read More
