Introduction of Coins

The half dollars of 1823 form an interesting collection all their own. Difficulty in creating and maintaining a suitable numeral 3 punch resulted in several line entries within popular catalogs. Overall, this date is fairly available in Mint State grades, with a small number of gem pieces for the most advanced collectors. Overton-101 is known as the Broken 3 variety, as the upper and lower arcs of the 3 appear to be partially separated. An engraver's crude reinforcement of the connecting point resulted in O-101a, called the Patched 3. Though most 1823 halves could be described as having awkward 3s, the only one designated as the Ugly 3 is O-110a. The junction of the upper and lower arcs either filled in through chipping of the die or was deliberately filled by an engraver. None of these varieties is rare, but they are included in some coin albums and remain quite popular. The only rare varieties for the date are O-109 and the very rare O-113. Their features are not particularly distinctive, but for those seeking completion by die marriages they will command strong premiums.Read More
