Introduction of Coins
This year witnessed the highest mintage of half dollars to date, and Mint State survivors are more plentiful than for previous issues. Gems exist in sufficient numbers to grace many a type set. As in 1825, none of the many dies used resulted in a popular variety that would warrant a separate line item in coin catalogs. Some 13 obverse dies were paired with 18 reverses, a few of the latter being carryovers from 1825. These were used in various combinations to create 20 known die marriages. It's always possible that additional die marriages were employed, but if so, no examples have been discovered. None of the 1826 varieties are truly rare, but O-103 and O-115 are scarce enough to carry a premium among specialists.Read More
