Introduction of Coins
Though the production of half dollars fell from the highs of 1826-27, this is still a rather common date across most grades. Mint State pieces are fairly common, with gems being in limited supply. Four different date styles were employed, and these were paired with two different sizes of reverse lettering. The result was no fewer than five distinctive combinations of obverse and reverse styles that merit separate line items in popular catalogs. These include a Curled Base 2, with or without a knob on the 2, a Square Base 2, with either Large or Small 8s on obverse and either Large or Small Letters on the reverse. There is little difference in rarity or value among these five configurations, but individual die marriages include some very scarce entries: O-105 and O-123. The total number of dies identified to date are 13 obverses and 19 reverses, with some 23 die marriages between them.Read More
