Introduction of Coins
The numismatic hobby enjoyed a growth spurt during the 1870s-80s, and this may explain in part the greater number of silver proof sets sold in 1870. Mint records, however, are always subject to some interpretation, and it may just be that more of these sales were reported than in past years. History repeats itself, as the number of proof coins sold since the 1990s have also been poorly and incompletely recorded. The narrow date logotypes typical of the 1865-68 issues gave way to broader dates starting with 1869, and these would become larger still in the 1880s.
