Introduction of Coins
Some 950 proof three-cent pieces are known to have been sold as components of the silver proof sets, and the number of additional pieces sold within minor proof sets is unknown. If later figures are a guide (the mint began reporting these numbers in 1878), it's likely that the total mintage may be doubled or more. This date is only moderately rare. Very few of these coins will quality as Cameo, and Ultra Cameo examples are extremely rare or non-existant. The repunched variety (1872/72) mentioned by Breen may have been simple strike doubling, as no such variety is included in the Flynn/Fletcher reference book.Read More
