Introduction of Coins
All proofs of the 1873 three-cent piece have a Closed 3, but this is included for the sake of clarity. An Open 3 logotype was subsequently used for currency pieces, but enough proofs had been made up to that time that no further pieces were needed. This date is noticeably more available than preceding issues, and even gems are fairly plentiful. It's almost certain that several hundred additional proofs were coined beyond the 1,100 included in the silver proof sets.
