For tourists attending the Independence Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, this often included numerous side trips. Among these was almost always a tour of the U. S. Mint, where many persons purchased proof sets to mark the historic 1876 date. This accounts for the spike in sales of silver proof sets to more than a thousand. This issue is relatively common, with only those from the 1880s being more plentiful.
