Introduction of Coins
Sales of proof coins spiked in 1880, and this had several possible causes. The rarity of this date as a currency strike may have compelled collectors to order proofs who did not normally do so. Also, there was a greater interest in proof coins across all denominations due to the proof-only status of the trade dollar. Finally, it should not be overlooked that the coin collecting hobby in general underwent a growth spurt from the late 1870s through the late 1880s. This date is plentiful in the proof edition only, though coins having cameo contrast are relatively scarce. Obvious repunching of the second 8 is seen on some proofs, but the market for proof varieties is extremely thin.Read More
