Introduction of Coins
This is the only date in the 1880s for which the demand is limited to actual collectors of proofs. The abundance of currency strikes for this date alone applies no price pressure on the proofs. This is another fairly common entry in the proof series, with a generous mintage that left many unsold pieces at the end of the year. Philadelphia coin dealers were known to visit the mint early in each year to buy up these unsold remainders at face value, accounting for the hoards which surfaced years later. Gems are readily available for a price, though true cameo examples are in the minority. The coin illustrated displays an obviously repunched date, yet there is little or no premium attached to such varieties when found on proofs.Read More
