A total of 1,000 complete silver proof sets were coined early in 1860 for whatever orders were received. Only 538 such sets were confirmed as sold, though it's likely that some additional pieces were distributed, as well. What is doubtful is that all 1,000 trimes were placed with collectors, the remainder being melted the following year. As may be seen from the example illustrated, proofs of this date typically are well struck, though not fully formed in all details. Both gems and Cameo coins are quite scarce.Read More
