Introduction of Coins
New Mint Director James Pollock put a stop to his predecessor's wasteful policy of coining 1,000 silver proof sets ahead of orders. In 1862 just 550 sets were produced at the beginning of the year. Some 430 were sold during the initial rush of orders, and it's likely that there were a few more scattered sales over the next several months. Any leftovers were subsequently melted, so the actual total of proof trimes distributed is unknown.
