Introduction of Coins
The coining of silver three-cent pieces was an odd move that was never repeated after this first year of production. Only 720,000 were issued, and the 1851-O is moderately scarce in all grades. Gems are rare, and most examples are weakly struck at both the borders and the centers. Seven die pairs were sent to the New Orleans Mint for this issue, and one reverse displays a very minor repunched mintmark that attracts little collector interest. Irrespective of varieties, the 1851-O "trime" is popular for its novelty value as the only branch mint issue.Read More
