The adoption of the Type 3 modified design in 1859 probably went little noticed by collectors, who routinely purchased their proofs annually in growing numbers. Some 800 pieces were coined, but it's likely that some of these remained unsold and were either melted or, as Walter Breen suggested, dumped by the Mint into general circulation.
